About

This blog provides documentation of my work process in creating Lumen. Lumen was originally conceived of for the ODC Pilot program, and premiered on March 26-27 at ODC. It is duet for two women and moving light source, a synergy of technology and movement. Lumen, a unit of luminous flux, measures the power of light perceived by the human eye. This project grew out of my fascination with light as a physical quantity and my experience as an undergraduate researcher at Stanford studying light-matter interactions, lasers, and how light behaves in a gravitational field. I further explored my interest in light through independent research in interactive lighting design with Elaine Buckholtz, participating in several of Elaine’s projects last spring and creating my own light installations. Lumen represents the culmination of this inquiry—an examination of how light creates shared space between performers as well as the power of light to reveal or obscure what we perceive.
